Agave montana
A cold-hardy agave from Mexican mountains. Beautiful compact rosette with red spines.
Agave montana is a high-altitude species from the mountain ranges of Tamaulipas and Nuevo León, Mexico, where it grows at elevations of 1,500–3,000 m under conditions of cold, seasonal snow, and intense sunlight. This challenging native habitat has endowed it with exceptional cold hardiness, reportedly surviving to around -12°C. The broad, dark green leaves are edged with reddish-brown teeth and tipped with a reddish-dark brown terminal spine—an attractive color contrast. Mature rosettes reach 50–100 cm tall. Growth is slow. Full sun is preferred, and the plant is comfortable in cooler temperatures than most agaves. Water when the soil dries out; ensure excellent drainage. In Japan, outdoor year-round cultivation is possible across a wide range of climates, including areas that receive light snowfall. The combination of cold tolerance, attractive red-and-green coloration, and compact form makes A. montana an increasingly popular garden plant as well as a collector's item.
