Tortoises are long-lived pets (30+ years) that form bonds with their keepers. Species vary greatly in their environmental needs.
Hermann's Tortoise (most beginner-friendly, dry environment), Russian Tortoise (small, burrower), Greek Tortoise (slightly more humidity-tolerant).
Minimum 5-8x shell length in enclosure length. Basking lamp (30-35C hot spot), UVB light (essential for D3 synthesis), shallow water dish, and hide.
Ideal in warm seasons. Bury fencing 30cm underground (tortoises dig). Provide shade areas, predator protection, and bring indoors below 15C.
Dandelion greens, plantain, mulberry leaves, squash. Dust with calcium 3-4 times per week. Avoid cabbage and spinach.
