Essential temperature and humidity control for reptiles: species-specific ranges, hot spot setup, and thermostat usage explained.
Reptiles are ectothermic animals that cannot regulate their own body temperature. Properly managing the temperature and humidity of their environment is the most critical factor in maintaining health. Here's a foundational guide to reptile temperature and humidity management.
Reptile metabolism, digestion, and immune function all change based on ambient temperature. Temperatures too low cause digestive problems and immune suppression; temperatures too high can lead to fatal heat stroke. Creating a proper temperature gradient allows reptiles to self-select their comfortable zone.
Establish a "warm area (hot spot)" and a "cool area (cool spot)" within the enclosure to create a temperature gradient.
Install a basking lamp or ceramic heater at one end of the enclosure. The reptile will move here when it wants to warm up.
Set up at the opposite end from the hot spot. No additional heating needed—room temperature is fine.
A thermostat automatically turns heating devices on/off based on a set temperature. Since manual temperature management is impractical, always use a thermostat. Place the temperature sensor near the center of the hot spot and set an upper temperature limit.
Species from arid regions like Leopard Geckos require about 40-50% humidity. However, provide a moist hide (shelter with damp moss) before shedding to locally raise humidity.
Species from tropical rainforests like Crested Geckos and Tree Pythons need 60-80% humidity. Misting 1-2 times daily or installing a mist system is effective.
Place at least two digital temperature/humidity gauges (one at the hot spot side, one at the cool spot side). Inexpensive ones work fine, but calibrate periodically.
On Bri-Choku, you can ask reptile breeders directly about optimal temperature and humidity conditions for your specific individual. Since individual differences exist beyond species norms, use the breeder's advice as your guide.
