Complete gargoyle gecko care guide: differences from crested geckos, temperature and humidity, fruit-based diets, and handling tips.
Gargoyle geckos (Rhacodactylus auriculatus) are New Caledonian geckos named for their horn-like cranial bumps resembling gargoyles. They share similar care requirements with crested geckos but with some notable differences.
Housing: vertical enclosures (45x45x60cm minimum) with branches, cork bark, and live or artificial plants. Temperature: 22-27°C (avoid exceeding 29°C). Humidity: 60-80%, maintained through evening misting. Diet: commercial crested gecko diet supplemented with occasional insects.
Key differences from crested geckos: gargoyle geckos can regenerate their tails (crested geckos cannot), tend to be more terrestrial, and are more prone to conspecific aggression -- solo housing is strongly recommended. They come in beautiful color morphs including striped, reticulated, and various base colors from white to deep red.
