Light needs for orchids by species—Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium—with LED tips and shading methods.
Orchids vary greatly in their light requirements by type. Insufficient light prevents blooming, while too much direct sunlight causes leaf burn. Providing the right light environment for each variety is fundamental to healthy cultivation.
Light levels for orchids are measured in lux. General classifications are:
Phalaenopsis: Dislikes direct sunlight, prefers bright indirect light. A windowsill with sheer curtains is ideal. Summer direct sun causes leaf burn, so always provide shade.
Cattleya: Bright location with 30–50% shade spring through autumn; direct sunlight is tolerable in winter. South-facing windows with shade netting are ideal.
Cymbidium/Dendrobium: More light produces better flowering. Semi-shade outdoors (about 50% shade) spring through autumn produces well-developed plants.
Paphiopedilum: A shade-loving orchid that dislikes strong light. Can grow well on north-facing windowsills or under fluorescent lighting.
Plant growth LEDs are effective in environments lacking natural light.
The orchid category also provides hints for selecting varieties based on light levels. By telling breeders about your placement environment, they may recommend suitable varieties.
