Complete clownfish breeding guide: pairing, spawning signs, egg care, hatching timing, and fry feeding with rotifers and brine shrimp.
Clownfish are among the easier marine fish to breed. Once a stable pair forms, they spawn regularly, offering the rewarding experience of raising fry.
Clownfish undergo sex change — the largest individual becomes female. Pair two differently-sized fish and allow 1-3 months for the pair to stabilize.
Requires 26-28C, stable water quality (nitrates below 10ppm), and mature adults. Signs include surface cleaning behavior, female belly swelling, and male courtship displays.
Eggs are laid on flat surfaces and tended primarily by the male. At 26C, hatching occurs in 7-10 days. Eggs change from orange to dark, with silver eyes visible just before hatching. Hatching occurs after lights out.
Collect fry using a light trap after dark. Feed SS-type rotifers for the first 3 days, then transition to newly-hatched brine shrimp by day 3-7. Begin weaning to powdered food after 2 weeks.
