Guide to creating carnivorous plant terrariums. Covers container, soil, humidity, and lighting setup for Nepenthes, Sarracenia, and Venus flytraps.
Terrarium growing is an attractive method for cultivating carnivorous plants indoors while recreating a near-natural environment. The high humidity of a terrarium makes it ideal for moisture-loving carnivorous species.
Ideal: Lowland Nepenthes (thrive in warm, humid conditions), Cephalotus (compact and humidity-loving), Pinguicula (compact), Tropical Drosera
Conditional: Venus Flytraps (dormancy management is challenging), Sarracenia (requires a large terrarium)
Reptile terrariums with ventilation openings work best. A minimum of 30 cm x 30 cm x 45 cm is recommended for a single Nepenthes. Larger containers provide more stable environments.
Layout Steps 1. Layer 2–3 cm of pumice at the bottom 2. Place mesh on top to prevent substrate migration 3. Add 5–10 cm of sphagnum moss 4. Arrange driftwood and rocks for visual interest, then position plants
Target 60–80% humidity. Full enclosure causes mold, so always include ventilation openings. Open the lid once daily for air exchange.
Choose full-spectrum plant grow LEDs and run them for 10–12 hours daily using a timer. LEDs produce minimal heat, making them ideal for terrarium use.
