How to propagate carnivorous plants: division, leaf cuttings, and seed sowing for Venus flytraps, Nepenthes, and sundews.
Carnivorous plants have unique biology, but mastering propagation techniques enables efficient multiplication. Choose the optimal method for each species.
Best suited for Venus flytraps (Dionaea). In spring when emerging from dormancy, separate the rhizome at natural division points. Confirm that each division has well-established roots and plant in a mix of peat moss and perlite.
Particularly successful with sundews (Drosera). Cut a healthy leaf from the base and lay it on moistened peat moss. Maintaining high humidity produces tiny new plantlets in 4–6 weeks. Using a lidded container or plastic wrap to maintain humidity is the key.
Nepenthes can be propagated by cutting stems below a node and inserting into moist sphagnum moss. Rooting may take several weeks to months, but high humidity and warm conditions (around 25°C) improve success rates.
Sow seeds on peat moss and manage with tray watering. Temperate species (such as Sarracenia) require 4 weeks of cold treatment (moist cold stratification in a refrigerator) for germination. Tropical species can be sown directly.
