Bonsai growth timelines by species: seed and cutting development, growth rates for popular species, and styling acceleration techniques.
Bonsai is an art of shaping trees over many years. However, growth rates vary greatly by species, and the choice of starting material affects how quickly a tree becomes displayable.
Development Timeline by Starting Material
- Seedling (from seed): 5–10+ years to become a displayable bonsai. Trunk thickening is slow and requires patience, but the joy of developing root spread from scratch is rewarding
- Cutting: 3–5 years to develop into a small-sized bonsai. Best for species with easy rooting (maple, shimpaku juniper, etc.)
- Collected/nursery stock: 1–3 years to refine the form. Already has thick trunk, enabling faster completion
Growth Speed by Species
- Japanese Maple — Moderate to somewhat fast growth. Significant annual branch extension requires frequent pruning. Trunk thickens relatively quickly
- Shimpaku Juniper — Slow growth. Requires patient branch development, but offers fascinating deadwood features (jin and shari)
- Japanese White Pine — Very slow growth. Annual extension of only a few centimeters. But this creates a refined, dignified appearance
- Japanese Zelkova — Fast growth. The beautiful broom-style form can be achieved in a relatively short time
Techniques for Faster Development
- Ground planting (field growing): Growth is dramatically faster than in pots. Plant in the ground for 2–3 years to thicken the trunk
- Sacrifice branches: Allow selected branches to grow freely to thicken the trunk, then cut when desired thickness is reached
- Proper fertilizing: Apply solid organic fertilizer regularly during growing season. Nitrogen-based fertilizers promote foliage growth
Wiring and Shaping Timing
- Deciduous trees: After leaf drop through before bud break (November–February) is optimal for wiring
- Evergreen conifers (pine, juniper): Autumn–winter is optimal. Work when sap flow is gentle
- While young: Establish basic form while branches are flexible. Thick branches become difficult to bend
