10 common coral keeping mistakes with solutions for soft corals, LPS, and SPS.
Coral keeping is complex, and beginners often stumble on these points.
1. Too Short a Cycling Period
Adding coral just 1 week after setup. Wait at least 1 month, ideally 2-3 months.
2. Inadequate Lighting
Trying to keep coral with a cheap LED. Coral LEDs need blue + white spectrum.
3. Weak Water Flow
Keeping coral without a flow pump. Without proper flow, coral waste cannot be expelled.
4. Over-Dosing Additives
"More is better" is wrong. Especially excess calcium and KH supplementation is counterproductive. Always test before adding.
5. Neglecting Water Changes
"Additives replace water changes" is an advanced technique. Beginners should safely do weekly 10-20% changes.
6. Not Using RO Water
Tap water impurities damage coral. Silicates especially cause algae. RO water strongly recommended.
7. Sloppy Specific Gravity Management
Evaporation causes specific gravity fluctuations. Check daily with a refractometer. An auto top-off system provides peace of mind.
8. Poor Coral Placement
Placing coral in positions that don't match their light and flow needs. Soft corals need moderate-low light; SPS need strong light and flow.
9. Too Many Fish
Overstocking a reef tank causes nitrate spikes. Reef tanks should have fewer fish.
10. Rushing to Buy Expensive Coral
First build experience with hardy soft corals like Zoanthids and Discosoma.
