Guide to choosing the right lighting for aquatic plants.
Lighting is one of the most critical factors for aquatic plant growth, serving as the energy source for photosynthesis. Choosing the right lighting enables healthy growth and beautiful coloration. This guide covers LED selection, light schedules, and algae management.
Several light properties matter for aquatic plant photosynthesis:
Photosynthetic efficiency depends on both light quantity and quality (wavelength), so consider both when choosing lighting.
LED lighting is now the standard for planted aquariums.
Wavelength - Full-spectrum LEDs with red (660 nm) and blue (450 nm) LEDs recommended - RGB LEDs offer high color rendering, making plant reds and greens appear vivid - White-only LEDs are cheaper and functional, but red plants will show muted colors
Lumens Guide - Approximately 10--30 lumens per liter as a guideline - 60 cm tank (57 L) needs about 570--1,710 lm - Higher light levels needed for foreground carpet plants
Color Temperature - 6,500K: Closest to natural sunlight. Most common choice - 7,000--8,000K: Slightly blue-white. Enhances water clarity - 10,000K+: Very blue. Not ideal for plants but used in marine tanks
Recommendation: Choose a full-spectrum RGB LED at 6,500--7,500K with sufficient lumens for your tank size.
Low Light (10--15 lm/L) - Anubias nana, Microsorum, Java moss - Cryptocoryne species, Vallisneria - Mostly shade-tolerant plants that grow without CO2
Medium Light (15--25 lm/L) - Rotala rotundifolia, Hygrophila - Amazon sword, Echinodorus species - Better growth with CO2 supplementation
High Light (25--35 lm/L) - Glossostigma, Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' - Riccia, Hemianthus callitrichoides (Cuba) - CO2 and adequate fertilization are mandatory
Choose lighting based on the plants you want to grow.
Lighting duration significantly affects plant growth.
Sample Schedules
Adjust based on plant condition: extend by 1 hour if growth is slow, reduce by 1 hour if algae appears.
Algae growth is closely tied to lighting:
