Several light properties matter for aquatic plant photosynthesis:

• Luminous flux (lumens/lm): Total light output. Sufficient lumens for your tank size is essential
• Illuminance (lux/lx): Brightness per unit area at the water surface
• Wavelength (nm): Determines light color. Red light (640--680 nm) and blue light (420--470 nm) are most important for photosynthesis
• Color temperature (Kelvin/K): Indicates light appearance. 6,500K--8,000K is preferred for a natural look in planted tanks

Photosynthetic efficiency depends on both light quantity and quality (wavelength), so consider both when choosing lighting.

Choosing LED Lighting

LED lighting is now the standard for planted aquariums.

Wavelength - Full-spectrum LEDs with red (660 nm) and blue (450 nm) LEDs recommended - RGB LEDs offer high color rendering, making plant reds and greens appear vivid - White-only LEDs are cheaper and functional, but red plants will show muted colors

Low Light (10--15 lm/L) - Anubias nana, Microsorum, Java moss - Cryptocoryne species, Vallisneria - Mostly shade-tolerant plants that grow without CO2

Medium Light (15--25 lm/L) - Rotala rotundifolia, Hygrophila - Amazon sword, Echinodorus species - Better growth with CO2 supplementation

High Light (25--35 lm/L) - Glossostigma, Micranthemum 'Monte Carlo' - Riccia, Hemianthus callitrichoides (Cuba) - CO2 and adequate fertilization are mandatory

3. For evening viewing: 14:00 on -- 22:00 off

Algae Management and Lighting

Algae growth is closely tied to lighting:

• Keep photoperiod under 8 hours: Excess light is the primary algae cause
• Avoid direct sunlight: Window-side tanks suffer massive algae outbreaks
• Start conservatively in new setups: Begin at 6 hours for the first 2 weeks, then gradually increase
• Balance light and fertilizer: Insufficient fertilizer relative to light gives algae the advantage
• Blackout method: For severe outbreaks, 3 days of complete darkness can reset the tank
