Agave Pest & Disease Control: Thrips & Scale Insect Treatment

Agaves are tough plants, but they are not immune to pests and diseases. Early detection and proper treatment are the keys to protecting your prized specimens.

Thrips

The most serious agave pest.

Symptoms: White scarring appears on leaf surfaces as new leaves unfurl. Damage is permanent, and severe infestations cause leaf deformation.

Treatment: Apply systemic insecticide granules (such as Ortran DX) around the base. Spray contact insecticide into the gaps between emerging leaves.

Prevention: Apply Ortran preventatively once a month from spring through fall. Quarantine all newly purchased plants.

Scale Insects (Mealybugs)

Parasites that colonize leaf undersides and bases.

Symptoms: White cottony masses or brown shell-like coverings appear. Sap-sucking weakens the plant and can lead to sooty mold.

Treatment: Scrub off with a toothbrush. For severe infestations, spray with appropriate insecticide. Apply horticultural oil in winter to eliminate overwintering insects.

Prevention: Regularly inspect leaf undersides. Maintain good air circulation.

Root Rot

The most common cause of agave death.

Symptoms: Yellowing and softening starts from the lower leaves. The plant becomes wobbly, and a foul odor emanates from the base.

Treatment: Remove from pot immediately, cut away all rotted roots, apply fungicide to the cuts, air-dry for 2–3 days, then replant in fresh, well-draining soil.

Prevention: Use fast-draining soil mix. Cease watering in winter. Always empty saucers.

Other Pests & Diseases

• Anthracnose: Black spots on leaves. Treat with fungicide (such as Benlate)
• Root mealybugs: White powdery insects on roots. Rinse with water during repotting and soak in insecticide solution
