Adults measure 20–30 cm and weigh 800–1,300 g. The coat has a rougher, more bristly texture compared to the Teddy guinea pig, though both are short-haired rex-type breeds. Rex guinea pigs are generally docile, sociable, and easy to handle, making them suitable for families and owners of varying experience levels. Coat maintenance is relatively low-effort compared to long-haired breeds, though regular nail trimming is important as nails tend to grow quickly.
