Large lop rabbit, one of Holland Lop's ancestors. Calm and laid-back personality. Can weigh over 5kg — an impressive breed.
The French Lop is one of the largest lop-eared rabbit breeds, developed in France in the 19th century through crosses between the Flemish Giant and the English Lop. Adults measure 50–65 cm and weigh 4.5–6.8 kg, with some individuals exceeding 8 kg. Their very large body and long, pendulous ears—often reaching 35–45 cm in adult animals—make them an imposing yet endearing breed. Despite their size, French Lops are renowned for their exceptionally gentle, calm temperament, often described as similar to a large dog in their placid disposition and sociability. Their substantial size demands generous living space; a large exercise pen or dedicated room is preferable to a standard cage. Diet requires large quantities of quality timothy hay, appropriate pellets, and fresh vegetables. The lopped ears require regular monitoring for otitis externa. Due to their large body mass, they are also susceptible to heat stress; temperatures should be kept below 23 °C. Common health concerns include ear infections, malocclusion, GI stasis, and sore hocks. Lifespan is 5–8 years.
