Paphiopedilum rothschildianum, the King of Orchids, is native to limestone and ultrabasic rocky slopes near Mount Kinabalu in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo, at 500–1,200 m elevation. Robust plants 30–50 cm tall bear inflorescences with two to six large flowers held horizontally, each 12–15 cm across with bold dark striping on greenish-ivory petals. Entire inflorescences can exceed 50 cm. Time from seedling to first flowering spans 5–15 years, and wild rarity makes it extremely valuable. Cultivation requires intermediate temperatures of 18–28°C, bright indirect light, good air movement, and moist well-aerated sphagnum. Listed on CITES Appendix I; proof of legitimate cultivation is required for trade.
