Royal Gramma

The royal gramma (Gramma loreto), also called the fairy basslet, is a small fish of the family Grammatidae native to the reef environments of the tropical western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. Its spectacular bicolor pattern — vivid purple on the anterior half transitioning sharply to bright yellow on the posterior — makes it one of the most visually arresting species in the marine hobby. Adults reach about 8 cm. Naturally cave-dwelling, it requires rock formations with overhangs and crevices to feel secure. Generally peaceful, it coexists well with most tank mates. Hardy and readily accepting of prepared foods, it is a rewarding species for aquarists of all levels. A 100-litre or larger aquarium with ample rockwork is recommended.
