The Exotic Shorthair was developed in the United States during the 1950s and 1960s by crossing Persians with American Shorthairs, producing a cat with the Persian's round, flat-faced appearance but a much shorter, denser coat. Often called the "lazy man's Persian," the Exotic Shorthair requires significantly less grooming than its Persian ancestor while retaining the same cobby body type and gentle temperament. Like Persians, they are prone to brachycephalic-related health issues including tear duct blockage and breathing difficulties, as well as polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
